the seed for a future recall against sheriff ross mirkarimi. >> reporter: good afternoon. that's right. there's actually a meeting being held now in the mayor's office at city hall. it's about the citywide effort to stop domestic violence called peace at home. it's about putting up billboards, bus ads, talking about putting a stop to this. folks like the mayor and the district attorney, who are actually heading this meeting, have been talking a lot recently about curbing ross mirkarimi's power on different domestic violence issues and some people have actually gone even further than that. check out this website. this is an online petition calling on the san francisco sheriff to step down and avoid a costly recall effort. they want 50,000 signatures. right before this meeting started, we talked to the president of the board of supervisors and the district attorney. they say this is about turning around a bad trend, not the embattled sheriff. we specifically asked george gascon if he had an opinion about the petition. >> no. i really want to concentrate on the public safet

is not ross mirkarimi, it's not george gascone. it's the hundreds and thousands of victims and their families impacted every day. women's are suffering in silence. and there has been unfortunately in the last few months in this city, a setback because of the way that one individual has elected to handle his own personal shortcomings. let's be really clear here. there is only one person that committed a crime here, it's ross mirkarimi. george gascone did not abuse his wife. ed lee did not abuse his wife. ross mirkarimi did. we have a really horrible situation here. we have a high position, law enforcement officer, who committed a crime. then denied that a crime had been committed. then tried to mitigate his actions. then tried to blame others. and then put together a whole campaign to go after anybody that called it what it was, a crime. so, what is not being talked about here is the victims. the mayor indicated [speaker not understood]. we have had a surge in reports of domestic violence-related incidents. we've got women every day that are suffering in silence. we know how difficult it is fo

" finest, columnist ralph, and ross. ross, i'm going to start with you. you think both sides have decided it's in their political interest to go over the fiscal cliff. is that right? >> yeah, you never want to rule a deal off the table because we have lived through so many rounds that have ended in deals in the last couple years, but in this case, i think democrats think they get a better deal on policy by going over the cliff. that they end up getting more in taxes with less in spending cuts than they would get if they had to cut a deal right now. and republicans have persuaded themselves not completely convincingly in my view, but they have persuaded themselves it's much better to accept slightly higher taxes that they themselves don't have to vote for directly, even though they'll still be casting a vote for new tax rates, they'll be able to say, well, taxes have already gone up and we're just voting to cut them. so that's sort of how, at least, i think both sides are persuading themselves to sort of tip-toe off the cliff. >> and charles, i know you think republicans have more to lose
